Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddiqui was shot dead by three people in the Bandra East area of Mumbai on Saturday night (12 October 2024). The incident occurred outside the office of Baba Siddiqui’s son, Zeeshan Siddiqui, near Colgate Maidan in Nirmal Nagar, after which two of the accused were immediately arrested.

The Mumbai Police have recovered six empty bullet casings from the spot where 66-year-old Baba Siddiqui was shot. Doctors reported that he sustained three bullet wounds to the chest. Despite Baba Siddiqui’s car being bulletproof, the bullets penetrated through the glass. A 9.9 mm pistol was used in the attack. According to sources, the third suspect involved in Baba Siddiqui’s murder has been identified. The suspect’s name is reportedly Shiv Kumar, and he is expected to be arrested soon. Although the name has not been officially confirmed yet, it will be verified shortly.
Police stated that two people have been arrested in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, while the third suspect, whose name is Dharmaraj Kashyap, is absconding. Mumbai Crime Branch officials have been interrogating the suspects for the past several hours. Police stated that Baba Siddiqui had received death threats 15 days ago, after which his security was upgraded to Y category. The police also inquired about Lawrence Bishnoi’s involvement in this case, which has led to several important revelations. It is reported that there were three shooters involved in carrying out this murder, and one suspect was conducting reconnaissance.
In the police investigation and interrogation, it was nearly confirmed that the Lawrence Bishnoi gang was involved in the Baba Siddiqui murder case. During questioning, the suspects informed the Crime Branch that they were imprisoned in a jail in Punjab when they met a member of the Bishnoi gang. It was there that the suspects received a contract of Rs 2.5 lakh to kill Baba Siddiqui.
The shooters stated during interrogation that after carrying out the murder, they planned to divide ₹50,000 among themselves, but they were caught by the Mumbai Police before they could do so. The suspects had been living on rent in Kurla since September 2 and were paying ₹14,000 per month for their room. Now, three teams from the Crime Branch have been dispatched to Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Delhi to investigate this case thoroughly and arrest the remaining suspects.

There was a dispute between the two regarding the Dnyaneshwar Nagar SRA project, and last month, there was also a confrontation between them.
The Mumbai Police are also investigating whether someone acted out of personal enmity under the guise of Lawrence Bishnoi. However, the method of hiring a new recruit (aged 18-24) to carry out the shooting is typical of the Bishnoi gang. Baba Siddiqui was close to Salman Khan. A doctor at Lilavati Hospital stated that they tried to save Baba Siddiqui for two hours, but their efforts were unsuccessful. He mentioned that Baba Siddiqui had two bullets lodged in the front of his chest and had lost a significant amount of blood. When his family members brought him to the hospital, he was unconscious and unresponsive. Siddiqui was declared dead at 11:27 PM on Saturday night.
According to a report by the news agency PTI, a police officer stated that during the investigation, it was revealed that the attackers opened fire on Baba Siddiqui when people began bursting firecrackers during the Durga Visarjan procession. The police indicated that the attackers took advantage of this opportunity, as most people were unable to hear the sound of the gunfire due to the noise from the firecrackers.
Following this shocking incident, the opposition has raised concerns about the law and order situation in the state. NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar expressed that the deteriorating law and order situation is a matter of concern. He criticized the state Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis, stating that it is troubling that the situation is being handled so lightly.
